Online Tutoring History: A Study in Peace

Online Tutoring History: A Study in PeaceThe United States of America is now a proud member of the entire world and is no longer hiding behind colonial times. In fact, these United States is playing a very important role in the international world as an economy. At present many American citizens are studying abroad in other countries in order to enhance their economic opportunities and share their experiences with others. But, for some, they have lost their interest to study in US due to the difficulty of communicating with their friends and relatives back home. This is why it is the primary duty of the universities in the United States to conduct program and make learning more meaningful for students and parents back home. When it comes to enrolling your child or daughter in a college or university, one can easily access the information about the admissions of the institutions, facilities and campus. Even though, most of the institutions that they are looking forward are some that mi ght not even be found in their area, but they can still have an option to meet the requirements of their requirements. In the process of dealing with this problem, the universities in the United States of America has decided to set up a tutoring program for foreign students. There are actually a number of private tutoring institutions that have been set up especially for students who have grown up in another country and want to continue their education here. So, now, there is no reason for parents not to send their children to American universities as long as they are able to speak and read the language that is the native language of that country. A bachelor's degree is no longer the only requirement for them. The curriculum of each institution is different as well and there are some which are focused on math, science and social studies while others focus on humanities. One can also choose to opt for specialized English language courses at these institutions so that their students can also learn about the culture and language of their parents. Of course, such a program will make life much easier for the parents as they will not have to travel far from their home to reach their nearest university. This will help students to focus more on their studies and not spend too much time taking care of their local communities and culture. However, there are still a few colleges and universities that are not willing to treat their students according to this. If the students are in a foreign country, then this may not necessarily mean that they cannot make their way into their institutions. There are private tutoring institutions that are willing to accept the students from other countries.Students can choose the program according to their choice and their interest such as choosing a career oriented online degree or to pursue studies in a specific field such as health science. So, whether they want to study business, health care, education, sciences or technology, they can e asily find a program that will suit their needs. It is now much easier for students to go back to their homeland and stay there and raise their families here. The main objective of any college or university is to provide services and offer educational opportunities to the people of the world. Now, as a member of the global community, students of the United States can also visit any other country anytime they want as long as they have the appropriate visa.

Go Postal! 9 of the Best Websites to Find a Foreign Language Penpal

Go Postal! 9 of the Best Websites to Find a Foreign Language Penpal Go Postal! 9 of the Best Websites to Find a Foreign Language Penpal You know, they say  the world is getting smaller and smaller. Its a small world after allâ€"and thanks to this, its an excellent time to be a language learner. The truth is, were all being brought closer together by our modern technology. With the Internet, you  quite  literally have the world at your fingertips!Youve got  immediate access to nearly anything that strikes your fancy with the click of a button: Clothes, food, music, art, science, dance and, of course, people. You obviously  already know that there are countless social media sites and platforms that connect us with people from all  around the world.  We can speak to anyone we want, anywhere we want, at pretty much any time we want.Because of this, the foreign language penpal community is booming.New friendships across the globe are forged daily, due to  the high demand for  online language exchange. For language learners, this is nothing less than amazing. Why Should You Find a Foreign Language Penpal? If youre  learning a new language, or if you just want to perfect the oneâ€"or manyâ€"that youve been practicing for a while,  you should be jumping all over this. Why?Because, maybe, other than the small issue of time zones, which can easily be overcome, theres absolutely  no downside to  having a foreign penpal.Having regular communication with a native speaker of your target language will do wonders for your progress. Even if you end up corresponding with another learner whos more advanced or fluent, theres a lot to be gained from this interaction. With this sort of interaction, youll get more out of learning programs and authentic media like the kind on FluentU. FluentU takes real-world videosâ€"like news, music videos, movie trailers and inspiring talksâ€"and turns them into personalized language lessons. Learning language in context provided by authentic media is extremely beneficial, and youll only learn faster if you actually talk to someone about the subjects and topics youre currently studying. Youll have someone to correct your mistakes.  Ask your penpal to casually make note of any significant errors, or ask them to really go crazy and do a deep edit, leaving little markings and notes all over your writing.Youll be able to pick up and retain all of those little nuanced, colloquial phrases that throw us for a loop when were learning on our own, and especially when were learning with a formal method of instruction like a classroom or textbook. Those often leave out more informal language, which is necessary for communicating with natives. Its as close to  full-on immersion as youll get without having to pick up and move to a foreign country. In some ways, it can even be better than immersion.Dont get me wrong.  Obviously, living among the speakers of your target  language is going to shoot you light-years forward in your progress, but its not necessarily going to be a  personalized experience all the time. Strangers could certainly  become good friends or language exchange partners of yours someday, but the people you bump into on the street dont always have the time or desire to  really  listen to you and teach youâ€"not like a penpal would. So, rather than dealing with people in the streets who just want you to get to the point, you can have a  penpal whos there to support you as you learn and help you back up when you  stumble and fall through  the language learning process. The other fringe benefit to having a penpal is right there in the name. The pal. Some would argue that its the best benefit of them all. In the process of learning, youll form a bond with someone  whos a million miles away, yet, it may  feel like theyre right next door. Theres no need to explain the benefits of friendship, since we all know what its like hopefully. However, international friendship is a bit of an upgrade for learners.Just talking about your dear friend from, lets say, Copenhagen, will make you sound cooler in conversation. Plus, the two of you will share so many stories and so much cultural  information, that youll be able to talk about Copenhagen (or, you know, wherever) like a native. That will instantly make you sound smarter, more cultured and just all-around more interesting. Then theres travel. Youve now  got a friend in Copenhagen. Youve always wanted to go to Copenhagen. Guess what? Now you can go, and you may not have to pay for a hotel. Thats not always the case, but then youve still got yourself a free  tour guide, and youll get  to go to all the cool local places that are free of  Hawaiian shirts and selfie sticks. With a foreign penpal, youre basically opening up a whole new world for yourself  and youre doing the same for another person. It can be one of the best relationships youve ever had. Youll be expanding your mind, and yeah, making the world a little smaller one conversation at a time.Cant wait to get started? Lets steer  you  in the right direction.Go Postal! 9 of the Best Websites to Find a Foreign Language Penpal1. Int erPalsInterPals is arguably the most  popular website where language learners go to meet potential penpals.Youll have a wide variety of options as you search for the person or people who you match well with. Youre  definitely going to want to find someone you like so that youll be able to carry on a long-term relationship. Luckily, InterPals makes that easy for you.The first  way to narrow down your InterPals search is by letting people know how youd like to correspond. When you register, you have the option of indicating whether you want to communicate through email or snail mail. This is definitely good to know up front, especially for those of you who want to keep it old-school.You can also indicate the kind of relationship that youre looking to build. You have the option of selecting whether youre looking for friendship, a relationship or if you simply want to flirt. So, if you want to keep things PG, make sure you look for others who are in the same state of mind. As for all yo u saucier language learners, well, you might just get more  bang for your buck here (no pun intended ish).Another cool feature of InterPals is  the search filter.  Once youre all set up and seeking partners, you can narrow down the database of potential penpals to exactly  the type of person youd like to speak to, down to the age and  gender of the person. Also, to safeguard against time-wastingâ€"we need to save up all the energy we can for language practiceâ€"youre able to set your filters so that youre only seeing the  newest members, the most recently modified profiles and those with the most recent last logins. This is great, because  you can direct your messages to those who are most active on the site and who are most likely to respond.Theres also a live feed so that you can connect with people right away if you feel theyre a great match.InterPals has  many other cool features to explore. If youre interested, go sign up and check them out!2. Conversation ExchangeConversation E xchange is one of the simplest, if not fanciest, of the language exchange platforms. Here, all of your online communication occurs through whats essentially an email messaging system. Of course, youre welcome to communicate by any means with which you feel comfortable. The website gives you the option to indicate whether youre looking to communicate through snail mail, email or face-to-face. If you decide that you want to communicate exclusively through the Internet, you may select from a long list of chat software (i.e. Skype, WhatsApp, Hangouts) that you might use so that people can match themselves with you appropriately. One of the better features here, however, is  the profile deactivation. Dont mistake this with account deletion, as the two are mutually exclusive. On a platform  like Conversation Exchange, where language learning enthusiasts like you are brimming with excitement for a language buddy, you may find your inbox flooded with introductions and requests for friendship.A t first, it may be  fun to sift through all of these new peoples messages, but after some time it  can become overwhelming. Youll spend more time sifting through emails, sending friendly rejection messages or simply deleting messages altogether when you could be spending your  time actually writing, speaking and learning. If youve already settled into a comfortable exchange with a foreign friend through this site and youre not interested in making more, go ahead and deactivate your profile. Doing this will allow you to continue your penpal relationship on the website, assuming you two didnt opt for a snail mail exchange or another form of communication, without you being bombarded by new emails every day. When youre ready to meet new people again, simply reactivate your page and youre good to go.3. My Language ExchangeWith Conversation Exchange being one of the simpler platforms, My Language Exchange is on the other end of the spectrum. This website offers a very comprehensive service with plenty of cool features that will leave you no excuse not to put forth your absolute best effort when finding and conversing with a penpal.First, the website offers a translation tool to help you when you get stuck, as well as a feature that allows you to insert foreign accents. This is ideal for people learning Latin-based languages where there are accents and other symbols present in nearly every sentence. A lot of  sites dont always offer this, and since the meaning of a word can sometimes change with the use of an accent, symbol or some other character, it takes away the stress of having confusing or awkward exchangesâ€"and of trying to figure out a newly-installed  foreign keyboard layout on your computer.Another great feature is that they flag inactive or invalid email users. The last thing we want to do is waste our time with people who arent as serious as we are about learning a new language.  So, thank you, My Language Exchange, for making life easier for us all.Once you snag a friend whos ready and willing to jump into the action with you, the website offers  tips on how to effectively communicate with each other. These are focused on how to  write back and forth in both languages, how to give feedback and how to figure out translations, so that you can make the most of your time together. There are a whole host of other features such as games and lesson plans to help you really strengthen your communication with your penpal. Its safe to say that My Language Exchange takes the penpal relationship as seriously as we do. We couldnt ask for more.4.  PenpalandWith a mere 3,000 members, Penpaland is one of the smaller language exchange communities on the web. Still, its got some great features that can connect you with some great people. Its coolest feature is that it gives you two ways to search for a penpal: (1) theFind a Penpal feature and (2) the Find Friend From Travel Destination feature. The latter is a huge bonus for those who are looking for some in-country immersion as well.If youre looking to spend a year in Morocco to improve your Arabic or French, it would be nice to have some friends in the neighborhood before you get there so that you dont have a meltdown from loneliness and culture shock when you  find yourself in an unfamiliar land. Also, the profile page might feel a bit familiar, as it has a bit of a Facebooky vibe to it. You can add wall posts, photos, videos and links to websites. On the right side of the screen you can see your friends recent activity. So while it may be a small community,  quality over quantity is what really counts.5. PenPal WorldIf theres anything that PenPal World  values, its definitely user control.Like the other platforms on this list, it allows you to  use search filters  to help you find your best match. While searching, you can be sure you wont see anything unsavory. Thats because PenPal World has a zero tolerance policy for non-PG  content and behavior. When you sign up, your prof ile picture must be approved before it goes live so that you and other users dont suffer the misfortune of coming across something completely inappropriate. The platform  is big on personal boundaries. It gives  you the option to cut yourself off from anyone you dont want contact with. You  have the option to report inappropriate messages, minors can block all adults (as they should) and you can block users that you dont vibe with, and you can even block entire countries.  Not sure why youd need to do thatâ€"perhaps youd like to learn Quebec French and dont want French nationals to contact you?â€"but, regardless, the option is there in case you need it.PenPal World has both a free  option  and a paid option. With the free membership, youre permitted to contact up to three users within a 24-hour period. With the paid  membership, youre permitted to contact up to 50 users  every single day. Everyone has their own preferences, but for most people connecting with 50 users a day is  a bit much, especially if they all respond. So, dont feel bad if youre tight on cash. Three for free  should be just fine.Another  nice feature is the ability to  update your profile in real time and also pause it if you want to  scale down on new contacts.6. Global PenfriendsGlobal Penfriends focuses on helping people find the most perfect match. When you sign up, youre required to fill out a very detailed profile so that you can match up preferences, interests and backgrounds in the best possible way. If youre looking for someone whos just like you or completely opposite from you, youll have a better  chance of knowing who that person is on this platform.Similarly to the other sites, you may chat through the websites messaging system. However, if youre interested in snail mail, you may purchase snail mail credits for  access to a users postal address. They even have a service that  will create your letters and postcards electronically, print, stamp and send them for you. If you dont have credits, you may find other people interested in communicating through snail mail by applying filters and searching for users who indicate this preference in the  Correspond As section of their profiles.Lets say you come across a profile that you dont think is quite your cup of tea, but you know someone else who might be totally interested in speaking to this person. Theres the Tell A Friend feature that allows you to share profiles with friends. Also, if you dont have contact credits or havent subscribed to the sites Premium Membership, you can always Send A Smile to someone to let them know that youre interested in connecting.7. SpeakySpeaky is not advertised as a penpal website, but it functions as one. As soon as  you set up your account here, youll be matched with several users who are currently signed on to Live Chat, and there youll be able to message as many people as youd like.Once you find your perfect match, youre free to carry on your conversations the old fashioned way , through snail mail or email, but there are some good reasons to stick to communicating on  Speaky.First of all, you have a notepad which allows you to document all of the words and phrases you learn when speaking with your new contacts.Even better than that is the  correction feature. It allows you to correct your mistakes and your new buddys mistakes right in the text box. When you correct your friends mistake, or when you get corrected, it keeps the old version of the sentence and the new version so you can see exactly where you went wrong. Its an incredibly useful learning tool that you should take advantage of.8. WeSpekeWeSpeke is advertised as a learning platform  rather than a penpal platform, but like Speaky, it functions just the same. Here, structured  lessons are available for credits. After all, it may be useful to do some drills before you jump into a conversation. This way, you can consciously practice what youve learned  while speaking and listening. However, if you ju st want to talk, thats fine too. This website matches you with people by using percentages. It takes all of the personal information that you entered,  then ranks your best matches by percentage from highest to lowest. Whether or not these numbers really, truly determine how well youll get along remains to be seen. This is something youll need to test for yourself! One of the coolest features on this website is the built-in translator. Instead of having to search Google, WordReference or any other translation site, you can use the translation box provided by WeSpeke. Just type in the word you need, check out the instant translation and continue on with your conversation. Its extremely convenient, it eliminates  interruptions to the flow of conversation and its a great time saver.9. AyniAyni is small community, but it places a big focus on tending to its community. When you sign up, you get a personal email from a staff member  welcoming you to the website, and an invitation to  a 30-m inute video chat where you can tell them what you hope to get out of using the website. In this email, youll also get a link to a Facebook group of speakers of your native language so that you can share your experiences. Here, they really want you to feel that youre among friends. When you complete your profile, you select the little I want a penpal option and send the request. Youre not permitted to make this request more than once each day.  That may seem like a bit of a drag, but its oh so good.Having a penpal is about building a relationship, and this website gives you the extra support needed to focus on that from the very start. Its good to try and get to know one person at a time instead of frantically going from person to person trying to get someone to talk to you. Before you start your chat, the website also encourages you to correct any mistakes that the person may have made in their profile introduction. Its a great way to support each other right from the beginning. Some of their practical features are the translator box which, again, is very useful for when you get stuck. Also, for those of us who are concerned about time commitments, theres a feature that allows you to indicate how much time youre willing to put in with a penpal. Its great to be able to connect with someone whos willing to put in as much or as little time as you without having to feel stressed about not responding to messages or having to wait days for a response.Ayni also has a great blog  (which is mainly related to French speaking)  with lots of great information that will help move you further along in the language learning and penpal process. All right, now get out there and have fun!Always be careful when it comes to giving your personal information, even though  the good people outnumber the bad ones. These websites will guide you through the process as safely as possible, but youll also need to use your common sense and knowledge of Internet safety. After all this, remember, y ou might just meet a new lifelong friend, so its worth it.There are few greater rewards! And One More ThingTo get the most out of an exchange with a native speaker, you need to be exposing yourself to real native contentâ€"this will not only give you things to discuss with your new penpal, but will also help you communicate more effectively by teaching you the language as natives actually use it.FluentU takes real-world videos like music videos, movie trailers, news and inspiring talks, and turns them into language learning experiences, as you can see here:FluentU App Browse Screen.FluentU has interactive captions that let you tap on any word to see an image, definition, audio and useful examples. Or James Horner’s memorable score to Titanic with the sound of bellowing French Horns to enhance the dramatic scenes of the film. Can you imagine watching a movie without a score? The film score evokes an audience’s emotion, enhances dramatic scenes, and provides thematic cues for particular characters. Film scores are dynamic, and the best composers truly capture and convey what the film director is trying to express. 14-year-old musical prodigy Sophia has a gift of composition and a finely trained ear to follow in the footsteps of some of the most legendary composers of her time. Composing music, no matter the genre, requires a level of logic and focus that Sophia has learned at a very young age. She’s currently studying under composer Edward Top for composition lessons at the prestigious Vancouver Academy of Music. With ten written compositions under her belt, it’s no surprise that Sophia’s six-instrument composition was performed by a professional ensemble. She was also the winner of the best Bach interpretation back-to-back years at the Coquitlam District Music Festival in 2017 and 2018. Sophia contributes much of her early success in composing to her Kumon journey. “Kumon has helped me with composing music,” said Sophia. “Kumon has taught me that by setting small goals in composition every day, I will eventually achieve my main goal of composing orchestral pieces. Kumon has also sharpened my sense of reasoning and logic.” For Sophia, she’s always found a deep connection between Kumon and the world of music. “I feel that in a way, music and Kumon are related to each other. The overall structure and rhythm in a piece is like the Kumon Math Program,” said Sophia. “The emotional and expressive parts in a piece are like the reading excerpts in the Kumon Reading Program. Music and math happen to be two things that are understood by all people without any language barriers, just like Kumon.” When Sophia is not composing her next piece for a string quartet, she is perfecting her skills on the piano. Data Science for Beginners From Probability to Big Data

Data Science for Beginners From Probability to Big Data Everything You Need to Learn About Data Science ChaptersWhat is Big Data and Big Data Analytics? What Does a Data Scientist Do?What are Machine Learning and Deep Learning? How to Become a Data Scientist? What is data really?  Data is defined by information about the world and its individuals that is collected and analyzed in order to aid in decision making. Although data is, today, often associated with helpful data visualization, such as charts and infographics, it is important to understand the historical evolution of data.Looking to 3200 BC, when writing was first being developed in Mesopotamia, scribes would record data from daily life - such as tax and crop information - in order to improve their accounting and agricultural systems. As both the natural and mathematical sciences continued to advance, coupled with the introduction of better technology, mathematical statistics transformed into something more powerful: data science.Data Science can be fun for everyone!Data science combines what we tend to think of as traditional stat istics and computer science in order to analyze large amounts of data and find new ways of doing so.While data analytics utilizes mathematical knowledge from a statistics course in order to model data, data science functions mainly as a discipline that is used to extract information and draw new insight from large amounts of data. Some of the basic skills you will need to acquire in order to learn data science are:Calculus I IILinear AlgebraProbability TheoryMathematica StatisticsComputer ScienceThere are a number of online resources that can help get you started with learning or refining these fundamental skills. Sites like Superprof offer a wide variety of tutors that can give both online and face-to-face lessons in statistical maths and data driven computer science.Read about basic statistical methods and concepts. The first breakthrough in big data goes back to the second World War with the group of computers known as Colossus.Used through 1943-1945 by British cryptographers, the innovative framework was used to decipher codes used by the Nazi regime. While the term big data wasn’t coined until about 50 years later by John Mashey at Silicon Graphics, big data - and the large datasets that characterize it  - is still used in the same way. Meaning, computer programs and advanced algorithms are applied to analyze extremely large amounts of data in order to find valuable patterns and trends.Today, the analysis of big data can be done by a number of processing software and is performed by individuals, governments and companies. Hadoop, released in 2005, was the first free, open-source software that businesses and retailers could use in order to store large amounts of data and deliver better search results to their customers. Some of the most popular companies on the internet are using Hadoop, including Facebook, Twitter, Amazon and Linkedin. While Hadoop is widely seen as a revolutionary product in the field of big data and business analytics, there are a number of different programs available now, like Spark, that are equally as powerful. The mainstream definition of big data can be found within Doug Laney’s 2001 definition, which is n ow known as the three “V’s:”Volume: the idea that companies and governments amass large amounts of data from a multitude of sources, including social media and business transactionsVariety: the notion that data comes in a variety of forms, including text, audio and emailsVelocity: the idea that data flows in at a remarkable speed and needs to be processed efficiently and rapidlyThe most important extensions of this definition include innovation, which needs to be used in order to apply all three V’s effectively, and decision making, which is the ultimate result of processing big data.Transforming big unstructured data into decisionsWhat Does a Data Scientist Do?At the start of the decade, data science was pronounced by the Harvard Business Review to be the “sexiest job of the 21st century.” This statement was spurred not only from big data’s increasing role in business structures and governments but also from fact. Two of Linkedin’s 2018 Top 5 emerging jobs included data scientist specializations. The question is, what do data scientists actually do?In 1962 Jon W. Turkey wrote “The Future of Data Analysis,” in which he starts to wonder whether his central function in his field of statisticians was shifting towards what he called data analysis. While professions in data analysis are common today, the same ambiguities that plagued the burgeoning discipline in the late 20th century are now being replicated in today’s hottest filed: data science. While there are many definitions of what exactly data scientists do, there are a few key roles they fill, which include:Collecting, cleaning and transforming often unstructured, large amounts of dataUtilizing computer programming languages in order to do so (most often SAS, SPSS, Python, R)Finding patterns in and modelling the big data of enterprises and governments in order to increase profit or ameliorate strategiesInventing better ways of dealing with big dataAutomating these processesThe last poin t is an important implication of data science. While many businesses hire data scientists to discover profitable ways to convert their large stores of customer data into better business practices, other sectors look to data scientists to drive the future. The skills that are most commonly linked to this drive towards automation are machine learning and deep learning. What are Machine Learning and Deep Learning?Once imagined as a far-off achievement of the future, artificial intelligence, or AI, is now used daily - everything from digital assistants to photo face recognition features. While many tend to think that the boundaries of AI only extend to computer science, it still captures many data science attributes. Two important examples of this are machine learning and deep learning. One of the first attempts at defining machine learning was made by a man named Alan Turing. In 1950, in his seminal paper “Computing Machinery and Intelligence,” Turing sought to discover whether machi nes could actually “think.”A year after this analytical paper was published, Marvin Minsky and Dean Edmonds introduced the first computer-based simulation that replicated the human brain - otherwise known as an artificial neural network. Since then, machine learning has grown to encompass a definition that involves computers being able to receive information and learn from that data themselves, becoming more accurate as they continue to “learn.”While machine learning is widely considered to be a subset of the field of AI, deep learning is seen as a subset of machine learning. Taking automation a step further, the goal of deep learning is for machines to be able to recognize objects and concepts without being programmed to do so.One famous example of both machine and deep learning involves cats. While machines can be trained by steps involving algorithms to recognize a cat through machine learning, deep learning suggests that by exposing a massive amount of images of cats to a machine, they will eventually learn to recognize a cat on their own.In other words, one involves manipulating data in order for machines to predict outcomes, and the other involves introducing vast amounts of data so that machines can predict outcomes. Needless to say, both of these processes are moves toward predictive analytics.Become a researcher or the head of an IT teamHow to Become a Data Scientist?Fortunately, whether you just want to learn more about the subject or are looking to refine the skills you’ve already acquired, there are plenty of sources to help people interested in becoming data scientists. For those who are looking either for undergraduate or graduate data science programs that will suit them best, it is important to keep two things in mind:Is data science right for you? What data science jobs are out there? When deciding which data science program is right for you, it is important to carefully compare the courses offered in each stage of the program. While so me data science programs are heavily math based and tend to lean more on quantitative theoretical applications, other programs will be geared towards data driven business intelligence. One action that can help you decide which program will be meaningful is browsing job offers in data science that seem exciting and relevant to you and your interests. If you notice required skills that keep recurring in the job listings you are interested in, write them down and later compare them to the university programs you have selected. In this way, you can get a better sense of which program will not only be right for you but will help you find a job after you graduate. If you are already a professional seeking to switch paths, one important step would be to decide whether data science is right for you. To do so, it might be useful to also look at job listings that incite your interest and look at the common skills required. If these skills sound like something you would like to acquire, if they d on’t already overlap with your current profession, then start seeking out ways in which you can master them. Some common capabilities required from data scientists are:SQLPythonHadoopStatisticsAnalytical skillsData preparationYou can practice some statistical problems here.Fortunately, sites like Superprof offer a wide range of tutors in these fields and can be found quickly and easily on their site. For more information, data sets and data analysis tools, you can also check out some online resources like Kaggle  and the data science toolbox.

Ask an MBA Admissions Expert Betsy Massar

Ask an MBA Admissions Expert Betsy Massar Varsity Tutors brings you insider tips and advice straight from nationally recognized admissions experts. Betsy Massar has been helping MBA candidates with their business school applications since she was a second-year student at Harvard Business School. She founded her consulting business, Master Admissions, in 2008 and also serves as a resum and writing coach at the StanfordGraduate School of Business. Betsy has been quoted vastly throughout the media in publications such as Forbes, Fox Business News, and Poets Quants. VT: How much time should be set aside to adequately prepare for and complete the application for anMBAprogram? Betsy: Applicants should start as early as possible to wrap their brains around the fact that they are competing for a spot at a top business school. Theres a lot to do! You have to study months for the GMAT, spend time and energy figuring out which programs appeal most, travel to see campuses, cold-call alumni, and corral at least two, maybe three people senior to you to write thoughtful, specific recommendations about your excellence. To add to the indignity of it all, you have to write a set of personal, soul-wrenching essays that inspire admissions directors to pick you over the other potential Nobel Prize winners vying for your spot. Its a head trip. Having said this, I just learned today about a student who got into MIT Sloan off the waiting list who literally threw an application together in a few weeks. Stranger things have happened, but I dont recommend her high-risk strategy. VT: What would you say is the single most important thing to focus on for this kind of application? Betsy: Take the process seriously. But dont take yourself too seriously. VT: What doMBAadmissionsofficers look for most in the essayquestions? Betsy: MBA schools look for authenticity. That means being yourself. Not the person you think the committee wants to read about that person is nowhere near as interesting as the real you. Admissions officers want to read about your successes and foibles. They want you to present your case with maturity, humility, and humanity. Admissions officers act as proxies for your future classmates. Those classmates want to sit next to, or work on a learning team with, someone who can really contribute to the party. They want people who know how to pull their own weight, compete on a very big stage, and make a difference in the world. And also people who are talented, fun and funny. You may be thinking, oh, I am just another cookie-cutter engineer/investment analyst/consultant/IT specialist. But you arent. You are you, the real you. The more authentic you that shows in your application, the better your chances. VT: What are the biggest mistakes one can make on this application? Betsy: The biggest single mistake is to bore the reader to death through platitudes and unsubstantiated claims. If an application sounds like it was downloaded from a collection of Essays that Succeeded, its all over. VT: Is there anything that automatically disqualifies an applicant from being considered for anMBAprogram (i.e. low GPA, lack of particular work experience, etc.)? Betsy: Like in tennis, you have to get the ball over the net. Almost every business school publishes a class profile which gives a range of stats about grades, test scores, years of work experience, and more. Students should fall within that range---which is a bit of a dotted line---its not hard and fast, depending on your profile. Still, I do hear about people thinking they can get in on guts alone, and thats a bit delusional. VT: What kind of work experiences should be highlighted in theMBAapplication? Betsy: You dont have that much room in applications these days, so you should highlight work experiences that demonstrate your emotional intelligence, such as teamwork or ability to influence a group. Other emotional IQ characteristics might include flexibility, resiliency, and empathy. VT: What advice do you have regarding GMAT prep? Betsy: Invest the time and money to take a course or get a tutor who works for your learning style. VT: Is it absolutely necessary to have work experience prior to starting anMBAdegree? Betsy: Yes. VT: What are the characteristics of a greatMBAprogram? Betsy: Almost every top business school offers the following great characteristics: incredibly smart, talented, international students and faculty, a great alumni network, good job placement, and wonderful facilities. The more important question is, what is great for you? You might want to live on a rural campus and I might want to live in the heart of a big city. You might want to work in London after graduation and I might want to work in Silicon Valley You might have gone to a small undergraduate school and want a big university environment for graduate school and I might want the opposite. There are so many variables! The important thing is to figure out what is important to you, not your parents, boyfriend/girlfriend, second-grade teacher, Mark Zuckerberg, or some guy who publishes ranking statistics. Its about knowing yourself and what works for you. Otherwise, why spend the $150,000? For more information, visit MasterAdmissions.com.
